Fred Seibert was kind enough to ask me to do a poster design for The Channel Frederator Awards Show, and since I’ve been obsessed with CG lately, I thought it would be fun to take a shot at doing this poster using that method.
I submitted a couple of very rough concept sketches, of which they chose the second one.

When I proposed the idea of doing the poster in CG, which I’m not known for, Fred and Eric Homan didn’t bat an eye. It’s great to work with folks who ask you to be involved with a project because they believe that you will produce something interesting, regardless of the style, rather than looking for you to recreate your earlier work.
Thanks, guys!

Slick concept! Was ZBrush used to model the robot? Also, as for the second sketch, there’s something about the perspective of the robot that makes it stand out visually.

Hi kartooner,
I’m glad you like it.
No, I didn’t use ZBrush on this one because it’s so geometrical, with no real surface details.
As far as the camera angle goes: the sketch is a real cheat, and I may have to cheat a bit on the model as I experiment with the camera some more. I found that when I tried to duplicate that exact angle, two things happened that worked against me. The first was, in order to get that perspective I had to use a virtual wide angle lens, and it really distorted the model in a bad way. The other thing that happened was that the “F” on the torso became unreadable, as it wrapped under the belly. I may be able to cheat it as I play around with the various settings some more, but if I have to live with this version I’ll be happy.
Take care,
Frank
