One is a turntable of the model, and the other is an animation/normal map test of the character walking over a BG still from the original film. I really wanted to emulate Harryhausen’s animation style in this test.

I recently got to design and paint a song sequence for Wow! Wow! Wubbzy!, called Paint a Picture, which was the most fun I’ve had in a long time. Trying to paint Wubbzy in the style of Gustav Klimt was something I never thought I’d have to do, but what a great assignment. I also did a Dali, a Picasso, a Warhol, and others. Thanks, Google, for making it easy to find all the reference that I could ever want of classic paintings to “borrow” from. I love the internet!

It’s great to work with folks who ask you to be involved with a project because they believe that you will produce something interesting, regardless of the style, rather than looking for you to recreate your earlier work.

Thanks, guys!

Above is a thumbnail sheet of the design work for a song sequence from the upcoming Nick Jr. series, Wow! Wow! Wubbzy! The show was created by the inimitable Bob Boyle, who I met while working on the Fairly OddParents and Danny Phantom series at Nickelodeon.

I had the pleasure of watching Bob develop his shows, which began with rough sketches and notes in yellow legal pads, that he diligently worked on every day in his “spare” time. It was inspiring to see a person who works so hard at his day job, have the discipline to turn down lunch offers every day so that he could go off to his regular booth at the local coffee shop to work on the stories and art for his personal projects.

Eventually, his legal pad scribblings became the basis for two series that are currently in production at two different cable networks. It’s good to see that good things do happen to good people.

I had wanted to be involved with Wubbzy as soon as I heard that it was going to be picked up because the style of the show is so darned cute, but the timing didn’t work out, as I still had commitments to FOP and Danny, which I had been working on concurrently and consumed virtually all my time. When Fairly OddParents finished preproduction, it freed me up to take on some freelance, and the opportunity eventually came around to do the character, prop, and BG designs for song sequences for Wubbzy. The thumbnail sheet above is from one of those sequences, and as a designer it’s great to have that much input into the design of a film.

Of course, the style was already set by Bob, and there is a very talented team of designers working on the regular episodes whose work I routinely pillage, and then the stuff is recolored by people who know what they’re doing, so I can’t take too much credit. Since the show is animated in Flash, the design work is done in Adobe Illustrator. This means that I can build a library of work that had been done by others, cobble it together into scenes, and then take credit for it as my own! I love modern technology! If the shows were hand drawn, like in the good old days when cameras had film, I’d have to stoop to actually tracing the original designs, and that would be like…work.

This is a portrait that I did in Illustrator of Scotty Moore, Elvis’ first guitarist and manager. If you want to read the story of an honest artist that helped create a genre, yet never received a dime in royalties, take a look at That’s Alright, Elvis: The Untold Story of Elvis’s First Guitarist and Manager, Scotty Moore

Scotty not only played guitar for Elvis, but scouted him for Sun Records, and managed the trio that set the teenage record buying world aflame. But he neglected to get Elvis’ signature on the dotted line when a verbal offer for a percentage of royalties was made. Unfortunately, for the trusting Mr. Moore, a very domineering personality got involved with Elvis’ career and Scotty was relegated to session fees for his pioneering work.

Let that be a lesson to all you artists who are too shy to ask for what you deserve! Honesty is always the best policy, but don’t expect everyone you deal with to be as honest as you are.

After I uploaded it, I noticed that it looked a bit different than it was intended to. For technical reasons that I’m still figuring out, the proprtions of the character changed when I imported it to Maya.

The images above are how the guy looks in ZBrush. I’m right in the middle of a leaning curve with this stuff, but I’m beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

I just want to get to the point where I can concieve an idea, sculpt it, rig it and animate it! Is that too much to ask?!?

This weekend I went to the San Diego Comic-Con to hang out with some friends, but I really went to meet Ray Harryhausen. He was there signing books, DVDs, figures and comics that were for sale. I went first thing in the morning to the booth he was at, and I was relieved, and amazed that there weren’t more people lined up to meet him.

Harryhausen was one of the handful of heroes to my friends and myself as we made our way into the SFX and animation industries. We used to study his films on super 8 in search of the magic secrets of animation. When I met him, and shook his hand, I was still hoping that some of that magic would rub off. Ray Harryhausen inspired at least two generations of filmmakers with his superhuman efforts; there must be some sort of medal available for a man that animated seven skeletons fighting live actors, in an era when video tap wasn’t even a concept, let alone a reality.

After half the day wandering around the con and having lunch with friends, I went back up to my hotel room to relax, and the next thing I know I’ve got my computer on, with ZBrush loaded, and continued sculpting a CG figure of the Cyclops from 7th Voyage of Sinbad, that I had started earlier in the week. I got so involved with it, that I never did get back down to the convention that day. And by the time I couldn’t see anymore and had to call it a night, I was determined to go back to the Harryhausen booth and buy a DVD just so I could meet him again.

It’s not every day you get to meet a guy that was a one man genre, single-handedly drawing, sculpting and animating virtually every frame of film he ever worked on. And it’s not everyday you get to shake the hand that shook Willis O’Brien’s hand. So I was determined to make the most of it. Unfortunately, I was very much tongue tied, but I was at least able to tell Mr. Harryhausen how much he means to us, and the effect he had in steering us in the directions that we eventually went.

The images posted above are of a work very much in progress, it still needs much more sculpting and detailing before it’s done.

ZBrush is an amazingly intuitive program. Before I bought it, I watched a few tutorial videos at the Pixologic website and the ZBrush Central forum. Immediately after opening the box and installing the software I was able to sculpt most of the guy below in one evening. It is the most comfortable 3D modeling environment I’ve used, because it’s designed for the way pencil pushers like me think. Very cool!

In life drawing sessions, I’m usually torn between drawing what I see and drawing what I know. When I draw what I see, I’m trying to learn about wrinkles and folds, and other details that I can’t make up. These drawings tend to be stiffer and less fluid than when I draw what I know, and use the model as inspiration.

The lunch sessions we have at Nickelodeon are made up of short poses between 1 and 5 minutes, which are harder for me to do when I’m not loosened up. As my line starts to come back to me, and flows better, the quick sketches become a little easier to do, and I get more personality into them.

The series above is a good example, where you can see the transition from drawing what I see to drawing inspiration from the model. John Tucker is a great body actor and he brings music along to help the mood. This week he did a ragtime character, and at some point the whole environment of sight and sound got to me, and I started to see the poses as if they were drawn by John Held, Jr., a great cartoonist of that era. It was like a lightbulb going on in my head, and the drawings suddenly came to life. I also noticed that my shoulders, back and neck weren’t as tight as they usually get during life drawing.

That was a good session for me, because it proved that I really do need to loosen up while doing life drawing. I mentioned that to the model, John, and he said, “It’s supposed to be fun for you, too.”

Thanks to the miracle that is the internet, I just saw a trailer for Pixar’s upcoming film, Ratatouille, which is due to be released in 2007.

As I watched it I had an uneasy feeling of deja vu. Thematically the trailer is identical to a rough promo board I had done for my Roche character. Fortunately, I cut the sequence from the version of the cartoon that I’m now working on, but it’s really frightening to know that there are people out there thinking the same thoughts you are.

My buddy, Terence Taylor, has a couple of theories about that. One is, that when you formulate a creative idea and express it in some way, whether in words, or pictures, even if it’s not presented publicly, you’re releasing it into the ether to be picked up by someone else. Ergo, after you do that, it’s a race against time to realize your concept in its intended medium before someone else does it first. The other theory, and one that I believe, is that there is a collective unconscious from which ideas spring, by people of the same generation who are influenced by similar cultural, social, and political experiences. So it stands to reason their ideas will be similar.

I can’t post screen caps of the Ratatouille trailer, but I can post my initial rough sketches that were done somewhere close to two years ago when I had first conceived of Roche. As you’ll see, the concept is that of a vermin of refined taste in a high class French restaurant, that is discovered by the waiter and patrons, panic ensues, and then outside the restaurant he comes across another of his breed with less refined tastes.

Weird…

This sketch is a caricature of Josh Book. Josh is currently the Supervising Animator for the new show “Tak and the Power of Juju” at Nickelodeon Animation Studios, and finishing up working on a pilot for Nick Jr. He’s also the teacher of the Maya 3D animation class at the studio, which I am enthusiatically attending.

I’ve always been tech-conscious, having been a co-owner of a visual effects studio, and later a multimedia studio, where I not only designed CD-Roms, but programmed them as well. I’ve also dabbled with CG in my illustration work, but thanks to Josh’s very clear and direct communication, and his way of personalizing the instruction, I find that I’m able to apply what I know about the theory of 3D and animation design to a practical application. Soon I’ll post some of the stuff I’ve been fooling around with.

If you’ve been thinking about taking a class in computer animation and modeling, I’d highly recommend it. I think of it as another tool to help bring creative ideas to fruitition, and it’s a heckuva lot of fun to see what had previously been a rough sketch, fully formed and moving on the screen. It reminds me of the first time I made a flip book, or shot a pencil test. I don’t think I’ll ever get over that feeling that creating animation, in any medium, is a form of wondrous magical witchcraft hoo-doo stuff!

I’m lovin’ it!

This weekend The Stepping Stone Players, a community theatre group in Glendale, California, gave two performances of a play called “On The Air.” The show was written by me and my good friend, and Nickelodeon co-worker, Ernie Gilbert. Ernie also directed the show and accompanied himself on ukulele as he sang some great hot jazz numbers. The musical director was Dan “Soybean” Sawyer, an amazing musician and composer with a list of credits as long as your arm.

“On The Air” is a comedy in the tradition of old time radio shows like the Jack Benny Show. The show was actually originally concieved and written as a radio program, but since the story contains the “show within a show” device it lent itself really well to being staged as a play.

After we thought we were finished writing the show, Ernie and co-producers, Tom Camp and Belinda Howell, began casting. Based on the performers who showed up with their various talents and personalities, we decided to re-write some scenes, or create completely new ones. Ernie and I both went into this with the attitude that the show on the stage is the final product, not the script, and so we remained flexible throughout the process, and Ernie made subtle changes to refine the dialogue, all the way up to opening night.

Early on, Ernie invited me to be a part of the production, but I felt it would be better for Ernie to be free to realize his own vision of the show without the inevitable interference of another writer on the set. This distance also gave me an objective viewpoint when Ernie wanted advice. Another reason I didn’t want to see the rehearsals was that I wanted to sit in the theater and experience the final performance like any other member of the audience. And I’m glad I did.

Words can’t truly express what an experience it is to watch actors, musicians and technicians come together and devote so much of their time, effort and talent, to produce a piece of entertainment that a short time before was nothing more than vague humourous notions floating around in your skull. Most of what ended up in the show started out with Ernie and me cracking each other up during our lunch hours, saying, “Wouldn’t it be great if we could do this?”

Between Ernie’s love of vintage jazz, his irrepressible sense of humor, and our desire to write a show that was as entertaining to today’s audience as the the classic radios shows were to theirs, we thought we had a pretty good thing. But then as it got closer to becoming a reality we began to wonder if we were just amusing ourselves, and whether or not anyone but us would find this stuff funny. On the drive over to the show, with my family and friends, I was a nervous wreck. And I actually had sweaty palms all the way through the first act.

But, I’m happy to report that the show was a success. We had an audience that ranged in age from single digits to eight decades, and they loved it. What a feeling to hear people laughing at something that you had thought up during a lunch hour two months ago. And after the show folks came up to us and were telling us how much they enjoyed it and how they liked the way such and such bit of dialogue referred back to an earlier scene, etc. I realize that this might sound like boasting, but I do temper my elation just a bit by telling myself that the audience was comprised mostly of friends and family of everyone involved, so you couldn’t ask for a more friendly crowd. But, fortunately everyone in the theater those nights came away with a smile on their face and a spring in their step.

[cliche] And, that’s what really makes it all worthwhile; knowing that you had a part in making someone’s day just a little bit brighter. [/cliche]

Now, which freeway do we take to get to Broadway?

I thought I’d upload a post that illustrates part of my working process. The image above is the first page of the script for the Roche cartoon that I wrote with the help of my good friend, Terence Taylor.

Once a draft is complete, I re-read it with the intent to storyboard it. Inevitably, I’ll have a stack of very intimidating storyboard sheets in front of me, waiting to be filled with gorgeous drawings worthy of the monumental tale I’m to tell. But instead, they fill me with angst. I know it’s only paper with rectangles on it. I know the drawings don’t have to be perfect, they just need to get the ideas down so that I can go back later and rework them. But it’s like cracking open a new sketchbook and staring at that first page… I know for a fact that I’m not the only one who will turn the first page and start drawing on the next page out of fear of cursing the book by baptising the first page with a hideous drawing that will stare you in the face every time you open it.

And regarding storyboarding, I also know that I’m not the only one intimidated by printed rectangles on a page. I’ve seen postage stamp sized Post-It notes plastered all over xerox paper, only to be enlarged and pasted into the usual formats. I’ve done that myself. Whatever it takes to get the ideas out of your head and onto the page is OK.

For me the trick is to get the ideas down as I’m reading the script, and am involuntarily transported to the world I’m reading about. It always starts with some little expression that comes to mind, and I’ll scribble it in the margin of the script so I don’t forget it. Before I know it, I’ve got drawings all over the page, and I can’t even read the words anymore. The drawings aren’t meant to be pretty, and I’m usually not too concerned about camera angles or composition. I’m just putting down visual notes to myself that give me the courage to tackle the stack of blank pages before me.

For whatever reason the printed draft of the script doesn’t intimidate me a fraction as much as a blank sheet of paper.

The model was a gentleman named John Tucker and he is an amazing model and actor. For this session he came dressed as a pirate, with a wonderfully detailed costume, great props, and soundtrack music, all of which served to transport the model and the sketchers to another world. We loved his work so much, that we invited him back for the next four weeks.

In his posing, he is such a convincing actor that we don’t feel like we’ll be drawing the same person each week, but whatever character inhabits his body.

In the sidebar is a widget that allows you to switch between the themes. Try it out.

There are still a couple of little glitches in my poorly-hacked sidebar widgets, but it’s getting there.

Edit: Well, I see that, although it looks fine in Firefox and Mozilla on the PC, and looks great in Safari on the Mac, the sidebar of my Transistor theme is a mess in Internet Explorer on the PC. I’ll just have to do more research later when I have time, to learn about the incompatibilities of IE.

Well, I just had to design my own WordPress theme for my blog. I'm sorry if it takes a long time to load, because it's pretty graphics heavy, but I couldn't help myself.

It still needs fine tuning, which I'll continue to tinker with in my spare time. I adapted the theme from an existing one called "Remember" by Becca Wei of Beccary.com, and built a couple of widgets by adapting scripts that I found on the web and wrapping them into the Theme Widgets plugin and the execPHP widget. You can find WordPress Widgets and widgetized themes HERE .

Anyway, I hope you like it.

I did this piece, "I Claim This Planet," for the current Nickelodeon group show. As usually happens with these shows, I commit to entering something, then I wait 'til the night before the show to do the artwork, and then during my lunch hour the day of the show I'm out buying frames…

I did this piece so fast that I didn't realize, until it was too late, that I stole the idea from my daughter, Hannah. "Unconscious plagiarism" is what they called it when George Harrison was sued. I don't think Hannah will sue me, at least I hope not, but you can't get away with stealing even your own kids' ideas. At the opening of the show, a co-worker of mine passed me and said, "Being influenced by your kids' art, eh, Frank?"

Each year Nickelodeon also puts on a group show of the young children and friends of employees and my girls, Hannah and Sarah, have had lots of stuff in each of the shows since I've been working there. Their work always gets great reviews and it makes me very proud to have such talented children, but a bit envious that they're more talented than I am and they're still in high school! Anyway, I guess I had forgotten that the idea I stole from Hannah was in one of those shows.

You know what they say, "Good artists borrow, great artists steal, but the true geniuses rip off their own kids!

Among the additions is a gallery of my Roche sketchbook that shows the process I go through when developing a project. There are many variations of style of the character designs and some location and situational sketches.

I also posted a storyboard for a promo animatic that I did. The universe of that promo is slightly different than the direction it's been going lately. At this point I think newscopters and gasoline trucks would be out of place in Roche's world. But, it's a cartoon, so I won't rule out anything that works until I've locked all the laws of Grogan's Alley in stone.

This is a rough of another children's book that I wrote. Originally the little girl was named Daisy, but since then I've rewritten the manuscript and renamed it Molly, By Golly! The original story is in rhyme, but the rewrite is in prose as I've been told that generally editors don't like rhyming books. The rewrite also changes some of the events to make them less intentionally bad, and more a series of well-meaning mistakes that drive the father nuts.

The redo makes for a "better" story, but I still like the looseness and wackyness of the original. And that's why I'm presenting it here in its raw, original form.

It looks like this site is going to be the place for every project that I've done, but haven't had an outlet for. Today's presentation is LITTLE FLOWER'S BIG DREAMS.

In the past I've done book illustration and interactive CD-ROMS for Mercer Mayer's Little Critter, as well as CD Read-Alongs for Disney. Often when I do work for hire for someone else, I like to do something at the same time for myself. That's when I came up with this early reader of Little Flower. And since I had all the artwork done, I decided to do an online Read-Along as well.

Here are a few sample pages of the book:

And here's the Read-Along which requires the Shockwave Player Plugin:

On Mark Kennedy's blog, "Temple of the Seven Golden Camels," he's posted Handouts by Rowland Wilson concerning color, light and shadow, and composition. While I was looking over the notes on composition, it struck me that many of the visual concepts can be readily applied to the art of storytelling as well.

What follows in this post is a reminder to myself of things that I should be thinking about as I go through the creative process. In my own work I haven't always been successful at applying concepts such as these, but by thinking them through, and writing them down, I hope to improve. If it happens to be of any help to anyone else, all the better.

Rowland Wilson's Notes on Composition as Applied to Story

The phrases in quotes are taken directly from the handouts. The indented passages are my own thoughts.

Focus

"Directing the Eye"

Make sure that you keep your eyes on the prize when storytelling. The elements of your story, characters, dialog, locations, events, should support the themes, emotions and ideas that you are trying to get across. Lead the viewer where you want them to go. Don't meander aimlessly, screen time is precious use it wisely.

Tie Ins

"Places where the tonal value of the character anchor him to the tonal value of the background"

Your character should be grounded within the "reality" of the universe you are creating. Even in a "fish out of water" story the character needs to be a part of the world, however reluctantly.

Pinocchio on Pleasure Island being bad and starting to turn into a donkey connects him to the scene and the location more intensely than if he'd been a good boy above the goings on. The lure of the locale, and his succumbing to the temptations of that world, bring home the real danger that he's in.

Breathing Space

"Have some air or breathing space for the eye to rest in"

In classic horror movies there is always that moment of calm, just before all heck breaks loose. You have to give the audience room to breathe, and collect their thoughts before you take them on another wild ride. This concept is also part of both the Harmony/Contrast and the Grouping concepts.

Harmony & Contrast and Dominance

"The importance of harmony cannot be overstressed."

"Harmony is achieved by Dominance"

"Every aspect of picture-making is made up of linked complements"

"When one side of the complementary pair dominates, Harmony is created. Only then is Contrast Possible."

"Make the objects have a definite hierarchy"

"Dominant objects are usually not the center of interest"
"Contrast gets the attention, so it assumes a major role in the viewer's mind…But it absolutely depends on Harmony to exist"

These concepts work verbatim when related to story.

The scenes with Stromboli and Pinocchio are most graphic examples of this. Corrupt/innocent, Big/small, Loud/quiet, Heavy dialect/no dialect, Dominant/submissive

Internal Rhythm

"After the structure is solved try for internal rhythm"

Once you've got the overall structure of your story figured out, you need to then approach each individual scene as a mini play. Each scene or sequence has emotional builds and releases that affect the story as a whole, but the scene needs to have an internal rhythm to make it work on its own terms as well.

Grouping

"Go for a 'rubato' rhythm, uneven spaces, no two alike, visual jazz"
"Avoid mechanical "metronome" spacing. All the same, a march beat"

When applied to story, I think of this concept as "pacing." The pacing ot the story should be fluid and organic, not mechanical and predictable. This is where the concept of breathing room really comes into play. The quiet before the storm, tension and release, surprise turns and twists keep the audience engaged.

Style

"Avoid the diagrammatic"
"Avoid the arranged man-made look"
"Not decorative, not photographic, but an artist's interpretation"

This concept is much more subjective, because the artist's interpretation may be "arranged" and "diagrammatic", or "decorative". I think it's all about the intentions of the filmmaker as an artist with something to say, and getting that vision/point of view across to the audience by any means necessary.

"Use reference"
"Make your pictures 'what the witness saw.' Be a witness."

These points speak to the believability of your story. Use reference to add touches of reality. Research can put you in a place that your imagination alone might not.

I opened the subject photo on my second monitor, and did the color sketch on the PaintBoard page of this site in my web browser. What I call the PaintBoard is generally known as an Oekaki Board. On the PaintBoard you have different options for paint applications, and I chose Shi-Painter Pro. It’s a great little app that gives you layers, pen, pencil, watercolor, and many other options. Another cool feature is if ‘animation’ is selected when you start the painting, visitors can play back the animation and watch every brushstroke as the image forms right before their eyes. It’s amazing to see another artist’s technique in timelaspse.

I really enjoyed doing this one, so I expect I’ll be doing more. If you want, you can try out the PaintBoard yourself by clicking on the link at the top of the page, or on the sidebar. It asks you to register, but if you’d rather not, I set it up so that you can sign in as "guest", with the password of "guest".

Check it out!
